Kisumu Project

“Justice denied anywhere diminishes justice everywhere.” – MLK JR.

It doesn’t take long to become aware of vast array of injustice in our society today. With access to information that came with the 21st century (search ‘injustice’ in Google and you get 18,500,000 results), it becomes easy to grow numb to the pain that exists in our world.

When confronted with these experiences, we are faced with the decision to respond or carry on as if nothing has changed. Responding in love requires sacrifice, faith, and usually a step outside of our kingdom of comfort & safety. However, I would make the argument that not responding is the most dangerous thing we can do. Lack of response produces complacency, apathy, and laziness. Give me a choice of the two, and the latter is what scares me most.

“It’s time for ‘us’ to say that ‘they’ matter and together, ‘we’ can be a part of bringing hope to those who need it.”

This is the quote from Spendyourself’s newest partner, Life In Abundance International.

What is most striking about this organization is the true partnerships that they have formed in Kenya. Rather than developing a sense of dependence or approaching a situation with an attitude of superiority, they truly work alongside those that they wish to empower.

In January of 2008, post-election violence violence erupted throughout Kenya’s urban centers. Particularly affected was a city known as Kisumu. In addition to this, HIV/AIDS has devastated both families and entire cities in parallel. For almost years, Life in Abundance International has been responding to this crisis in Kisumu with a wholistic and sustainable approach.

To support these efforts, Spendyourself’s latest project, the ‘Kisumu project’, will be supporting the work done with AIDS orphans in the Nyalenda slum.

Blog Campaign– We need you!

We are very excited to let you know that our two newest shirts are at the presses. We will be debuting these shirts and the compelling stories behind them very soon. Before this happens, however, we need your help.

We are launching the first ever Spendyourself BLOG CAMPAIGN, and we would love to involve you in this effort.

Here’s the skinny:
This Friday, July 17th is International Justice Day, which presents us with a great opportunity to give a voice to those that do not have one. For all of you who have a blog, we are asking you between now and Friday to post a blog centered around this quote:

“Justice denied anywhere diminishes justice everywhere.” – MLK Jr.

After you blog on or before Friday and send us your link to lee@spendyourself.net. We’ll send you a follow up post next Monday to post on your blog which will talk more about how we can participate in fighting for justice as well as debut the new Spendyourself shirts.

Can’t wait to read your blogs!

Photography Fundraiser

Our friend, Stephen Seward, who is an incredible photographer in St. Louis is doing this really awesome thing you should be involved with. It’s called a Portrait Marathon… and for $50 you get a half hour session with Stephen in Faust Park in St. Louis on July 25 sometime between 9a-8p. Then, after you see your rockin pics, he will donate 10% of whatever you order to Spendyourself! I’d call that an awesome deal for everybody.

Check out the event here on facebook. Hope you can be involved!

Spendyourself Booth

Had a great time last night at the Fee concert. We only knew we were having a booth for sure for less than 24 hours… but we pulled something together and loved being there!

WHAS interview

It’s been another exciting/busy week for Spendyourself. Chris had his interview with local news station WHAS11 a couple of days ago and I think he did a great job describing our organization’s vision.  I’ve attached a link for all of you that have jobs and didn’t get to see it.

WHAS interview

On another front, we’ll be at Fee show tomorrow night selling shirts, so please stop by and say hello!

Sneak Peak

We’d like to give everyone a look at our first shirt series as well as our logo tees.

This first series, entitled ‘Omed’, will be used to raise funds to complete a school for refugees living outside of Kabul, Afghanistan.

More to come soon, but we would love to hear your input.

Frank’s Story

Did You Know?

Did you know: The San Francisco earthquake of 1989 was at the same time of day as the Haiti quake, and was of the same magnitude. Over 200,000 Haitians died. EIGHTY NINE San Franciscans died.
